Architecture of the Simatic S7-300/400 Systems

Hello! In this lesson, we're going to look at the architecture of the Simatic S7-300 and S7-400 systems.

  In the picture you can see the Simatic S7 300 and S7 400 systems. The structural differences are clearly visible. Simatic S7-300 modules are mounted on a mounting rail of special profile, 120 mm high, connected by a U-shaped connector which is equipped with peripheral modules.   S7-400 modules are mounted on a special mounting rack with connectors. S7-300 is positioned as a control system for solving problems of small and medium class. S7-400 is a system for solving complex tasks that require a large amount of memory and flexibility in the program construction.  S7-300 and S7-400 are programmed in the same package, in the step 7 software package. The command system is almost identical, which indicates the portability of programs. The main differences between the S7-400 and the S7-300 are  large volumes of the internal working memory of the controller and  developed operating system that provides a large set of system units and, accordingly, a set of tasks to be solved and a wide range of organizational units that allow parallelism, correctly to say, pseudo parallelism to handle multiple tasks. The S7-300 and S7-400 architecture has a modular structure. The main element is CPU. Next, as an example, let’s consider the architecture of S7-300. Information and control signals are transmitted through SM modules, signal modules. We call them - I /O modules. ...
